I decided to honor a true Irishman on this St. Patrick's Day. A 92 year old Irishman!
He served as the Archbishop of New Orleans from 1965 until about 1990 and is still running a public television station and tending his flock. During Hurricane Katrina he stayed in the television station to protect it from looters.
Archbishop Hannan was a paratrooper with the U. S. Army 81st Airborne Division during World War II and was known as the "Jumping Padre". I have seen photos of him in the snow in Europe on Christmas Day saying Mass for hundreds of soldiers.
He presided at the funerals of President John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy, and John Kennedy, Jr.
In New Orleans he built affordable housing for the elderly and made it possible for people to grow old gracefully and with dignity. He is truly remarkable.
I have another photo of him in his miter at http://www.pbase.com/image/53264442.
