I have based many works on on Sasseta's series of 8 paintings of scenes from the life of St Francis, seven of which are in Britain's National Gallery. These works which were on the reverse side of a screen which included "The Glory of St Francis" would only have been seen by the monks of the Franciscan order. Sassetta's backgrounds as well as his compositions are perfect example of pre Renaissance art - his ability to depict space realistically leads directly to the great Italian Renaissance artists.
This work is made from several layers of cut card painted with acrylic. I continue to use fluorescent, phosphorescent and interference colours.
