Every March a re-enactment of the skirmish at Picacho Peak is held at the park. On April 15, 1862 a Union force attacked a Confederate scouting party. At the end of the 1 1/2 hour skirmish, 3 Union soldiers lay dead.
This battle is generally considered the most westerly one of the Civil War and had an impact on the Confederate presence in the Tucson area.
Unfortunately, on this last day of re-enactment, many of the troops and horses left in the early morning because of the hard night during the night. Walking away and going back home happened a lot in the real Civil War so it seemed kind of natural when the organizers told us they were going to be short-handed for the day's events.
