Test Shot
Please view in original size.

Today the rained stopped, and I've been trying
out a Carl Zeiss lens I picked up cheaply on eBay, a 200mm f2.8.

I just love Zeiss lenses, especially for their bokeh, but my oh my,
is this one a lesson in manual focusing technique... This is gonna
take some getting used to, as this test shot shows.

I had it on f8, and the left duck is out of focus. What is more,
it's a tank of a lens! I swear it's twice as heavy as its supposed to be,
and that's before you spend an age pushing and pulling
the focus ring. I'm gonna need a tripod on wheels to get it
about!

I've also been looking into maybe getting a smaller camera
to use to take street candids. Something small but high quality and
good zoom, that won't make me stand out. Anyone got any suggestions?

Excellent. Keep working, you are on the good way ! :-)
Good idea to tell us to see the shot in "origial" size and thanks for the technical comments.

Very nicely done. Quite cute as well. The lens looks alright.

BTW: I just picked up a Nikon N75 film camera that takes pretty good shots, and I have always used an old Minolta X7A for street work but will be taking a trip soon to shoot street candids, I live in the middle of nowhere, and will be bringing the Nikon. I also use the D50 which is good and not too big. Minolta has a new pocket Point and shoot (Dimage X1) that I have not used but looks good as well.

Take a look at Nikon's Coolpix line. The lens half can swivel. So you can be looking in one direction and shooting in another. The subject will have no idea you are shooting them. I found it takes a while to learn to use the camera but you can get good results if you're patient and take the time to learn.
