Sitting at Snake Market
by Mark Maclean

This shot was taken in a Laotian fresh meat market. Fresh, it has to be said, is stretching the truth a little. I think that the flies agreed with me. As I was walking round, a few of the kids came out to play and they were happy just to see the camera flash. This little girl in this pic watched all the events but never moved, she had such a thoughtful and far away expression on her face. This, for me, struck and excellent contrast between her and the normal market goings on all around her. The original is in colour, but I decided to try to emphasise the emotion behind the shot by adding an overlay layer in PS to make the lighting a little more harsh. This has added some noise too, but I think that supports this shot. It was approaching dusk when I took this so had to use iso400 to get a decent amount of detail.
