Egrets at Dawn 02_27_06.jpg

Here is one of the first dawn photographs from Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. It really isn't a chick egret and adult; but, two different types of Egrets. I did one focused on the front bird and you could really tell it is an adult; so, I chose the shot with the Great Snowy Egret in the back sharp and the front fuzzy. Either way, the light was great.

Here are a couple of late afternoon shots

Bill, once again great shots. I've recently started to do some birding, and have been thinking of the 100-400L, but have been unsure whether image quality at 400 would be OK. But if you're looking at getting one, it must be fine.
Regards
Ronnie.

Nice capture Bill, I understand the travel issue, I have my stuff in a back pack and with the white ones togeather its flat out heavy.

Steve, I used the little Canon EF 400 f/5.6L because of its size. It is pretty small and light for a 400mm lens. It fits nicely in my bag and that was important on this trip. I'm really toying with selling it and buying a Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS which is also kind of small and light. The image isn't up to the 400f/5.6L's quality but it's pretty close and oh so flexible.

Bill, I notice you are using your 400 5.6 again for these bird images. Have you rediscovered the lens? Curious why you switched from the 300mm plus tc you have been using. I do think there is something special about the look of the 400 f/5.6. for birds (not sure why), but the 300mm sure isn't bad either. I was thinking you use the 400mm so little you might want to sell it to me LOL.
