In Guatemala, an extraordinary indigenous worship, originating in an Indian community of the lake Atitlan, developed in margin of Catholicism. It is dedicated to Maximon, a semi-god, or a semi-saint. Its physical appearance changed according to places', the ritual one too.Its creation, which does not go up more than 200 years, is lost in a multitude of legends suitable for the history of the Indian populations and the contact between the traditions catholic and Maya. Maximon is also Simon Pierre, in reference to the first apostle, Judas, Maya Mam divinity or the conquistador Pedro de Alvarado. This worship knows an expansion without precedent in the whole of the country.
Its effigy, kept and taken care permanently by the men of the brotherhood of the Holy Cross, is made of a wrapped wood body of scarves and of typical trousers generally carried by the Indians of the village. To return a worship to him, the inhabitants come with alcohol, cigarettes and banknotes, supposed offerings to guarantee the effectiveness of any request.


Au Guatemala, un extraordinaire culte autochtone, originaire d’une communauté indienne du lac Atitlan, s’est développé en marge du catholicisme. Il est dédié à Maximon, mi-dieu, mi-saint. Son apparence physique s’est transformée selon les lieux, les rituels aussi. Sa création, qui ne remonte pas plus de 200 ans, se perd dans une multitude de légendes propres à l’histoire des populations indiennes et au contact entre les traditions catholique et maya. Son effigie, gardée et veillée en permanence par les hommes de la confrérie de la Sainte Croix, est formée d’un corps de bois enveloppé de foulards et d’un pantalon typique généralement porté par les Indiens du village. On y a posé une calebasse et un masque lui aussi en bois pour former la tête, elle-même surmontée d’un ou de plusieurs chapeaux. Pour lui rendre un culte, les habitants viennent avec de l’alcool, des cigarettes et des billets de banque, offrandes censées garantir l’efficacité de toute demande
