Lonesome Lake is a glacial tarn suspended 1,000 feet above the floor of Franconia Notch in New Hampshire.
The lake is nestled on a shoulder of Kinsman Ridge on the south flank of Cannon Mountain.
On this particular fall day I arrived one half hour before dawn, having reached the lake via headlamp.
Only an hour's hike from the Notch, this is a popular setting and is quite well-attended during summer months.
Today, only two other hikers were seen before sunset.
The Appalachian Trail passes by Lonesome Lake and traverses Franconia Ridge which lies hidden in the distant background.
This photo was taken just before sunrise, the pre-dawn light mostly obscured by fog enveloping the ridge.
Exposure was five seconds at f/8 at ISO 200.
