... inside a 'bottle-neck' kiln chimney! The raw china items would be stacked inside
the containers called 'saggers'* then 2,000 of these saggers would be stacked carefully
inside the kiln and then coal-fired for a couple of days before producing the
finished article.
(* one of the first jobs young boys would do was called a 'sagger-makers bottom-knocker'!)
