Lighting up the sky

Blackburn Cathedral, Lancashire

"The lantern itself is a central 'teaching' part of the building.
People know the characteristic outline of the Cathedral and expect to see the lantern; they would be very disaffected if it were removed.
It is a lantern -- a lighthouse... no less. In the evening, as darkness falls, the lights within the Lantern shine out and are visible for all who pass by.

"This part of the Cathedral, the lantern,
was, from a construction point of view, something of a strategic withdrawal.
The original plan encompassed a great octagonal tower. This could not be achieved:
the War, expense, workforce, materials and other factors conspired to make the first intention impossible.

"The present lantern was the alternative plan and [has required] much repair...
[as] untested materials proved to be unsatisfactory and resulted in the loss of John Hayward's exquisite windows.
Only one window of his work remains and this is in St Martin's Chapel.

"John Hayward's design for the stained glass tended to be angular and pointed, almost slivers of glass and colour.
The present designer, Linda Walton, presents a totally new concept...."
