Ferruginous Pygmy Owl

A true cavity-nester, this small owl takes over nest cavities originally excavated in the trunks of trees or columnar cactus by woodpeckers such as gila or golden-fronted woodpeckers. The woods in this area contained several species of woodpeckers, including the larger lineated and pale-billed woodpeckers, which are similar to our pileated woodpeckers in the U.S.
