Praise to greatest...

Praise to the greatest Nikon F2 that is resting there on my right :)))
That was my Dad's old camera. A real mechanic SLR beauty from the late 70's
that I've coveted for many years...

It has it's original lenses the Nikkor 55mm, plus a Zoom Nikkor 80-200mm and a Nikkor 24mm.
It was lying around at my parents house gathering dust and finally after all these years my Dad asked me if I still wanted it... :D

Well... I thought it didn't even work anymore...
The lenses seem to have been invaded by dusk & humidity. But still I gave it the best cleaning I could and it looks as beautiful as it did decades ago.
Unfortunately the "Photomic Head" it's little electronic brain that gave indication about the exposure doesn't seem to be working so now it's totally a manual SLR!

I wasn't really expecting much, but I took it for a trial yesterday.
I've used a really cheap film (supermarket brand, lool) because I wasn't so sure that it would work.
...And this afternoon... there I am looking at the photos with an open mouth and totally in awe by the quality of them... I didn't know that I could miss the "clack" sound of that shutter so much...
Yes... the photos look wonderful, though it's hard to figure out the opening and the exposure without having a clue to it, but I guess that I will finally be learning what photography is all about.

So... I have my SLR after all. Not the Canon 350D or the Nikon 70D, but the greatest Nikon F2. I am very happy, because I know that I will learn a lot with it.
I will rest my brain from wanting a DSLR so bad, at least for awhile ;) unless... unless we're talking Hasselblad....
So, to you boy, that say that you want to marry me, I say... Don't bother with the rings, just give me a Hasselblad H2D39 and I'll marry you right now :))
Just kidding.
... or not.........;)

Real nice Ana. That's a portrait, including the ghosts of the past we are all living with.

How the heck did I miss this Ana?...Oh yeah, I was in the Philippines with limited internet access! You sure impress the hell out of me, not only with the great image, but your knowledge of the equipment as well! Indeed, even today, many consider the Nikon F2 the finest mechanical SLR ever built! A solid, professional workhorse, and a marvel of camera engineering. You lucky girl!! I'm looking for that Hasselblad to give you, by the way :-)

I love this picture Ana, you look like a pro! You have a very good camera, and I am anxious to see your future b&w pictures with this camera. If you have a chance, buy this magazine, see this site:http://www.bandwmag.com/current/index.html It will give you idea about b&w pictures, those are the best in the world.
Best regards
Guy

Thanks for sharing this adventure with us, Ana. Your photos can't get any better than what they have been in the past, but I can understand the joy of earing the noise of the shutter, and the power of the manual focus. Fully manual is tough so, and I felt frustrated so many times after discovering an over or under-exposed pics that should have been the killer, with my first fully manual SLR...
Can't wait to see the result.

Very nice idea und indeed a good reminder. By the way I love my twenty year old Olympus cameras too and more than the cameras I miss the lenses .... But in that older days we dreamt about the possibility that the digital cameras give us today.

This is great,Ana. Absolutely LOVE the caption and the image.
Can't wait to see images from your film camera.

Great image and words. I feel so lucky that I started with film though I never LOVED the darkroom. We still have a darkroom, but it is not getting much use lately and that is a shame as it is a great set-up. I still have my Canon EOS 10S and I most miss shooting Kodak HIE film in it. I love Infrared B&W. Probably because I love grain. I still have not figured out how to get good Infrared from digital. Anyway, great luck with the shooting. You have such a great attitude about mastering the tools that I know you will succeed.--Rene

Meditating in the results of the photos shot by the "new" old Nikon? Looking forward to see the photos :-)

I'm really glad for you Ana. I'm sure you're going to learn a lot.
I like how you composed this image. There is plenty to see in this. And I can feel the night atmosphere...
You're really good at night shots, at exposure...
All the best with your new camera!

The art of alchemy.Of how shall one turn from worthless to priceless gold? You ask for potions and spells and elixirs and wand of old.Of those things this generation would pass over as inconsequential inconvenience. They ridiculed our old school who felt the elements as companions. When things of import requested with dignity to be held with the hand as well as the eye. When they rightly demanded your studious intent of calibrated muscle, deliberate thought and a thorny way of experience.Where naught was surrendered to a simple automated mechanical convenience. When you the photographer are entitled to be called shaman, to translate the experience as contact reality. And not a shameful gypsy that purveys a transient trickster mirage.

Today I lend you my sword, my dignity and my trust. To thrust forward into a world of ignorant men that have forgotten their senses.Awaken them from their dreams!

Ana,
Enjoy your Nikon F2! I've an Agfa Isolette from the 60s from my late dad, which I have yet to learn how to use. It has tremendous sentimental value to me, and more precious than anything I own. And that bit abt the Hasselblad... well, we share the EXACT same sentiment! HAHAHHA... :-)

...ficamos completamente viciados... :))))))

Duncan . . . I would know you only desired me for my (Leica) body. :-)
Ana Carloto O'Shea19-Feb-2006 17:47
Well... I could perhaps open an exception for Leica also... :))
You guys are too funny!! Thanks ;)

Craig, Wanna marry me?
Craig Persel19-Feb-2006 17:35
Best of luck Ana. I have a 1980 Nikon FM. My first camera. Wonderful. It too lost its "electronic brain/sensor" and I had it repaired 1x and then it went out again. Must have been some "genetic" Nikon weakness with that component. But . . . they can be repaired. Really looking foward to the images. And . . . I too will take a Hasselblad or . . . Duncan . . . a Leica. My uncle has nearly the entire Leica system of bodies and lenses, so maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to inherit it. :-)

Heartfelt words, and a great picture to go with them.
Enjoy your new 'teacher'!

oh Ana... how very cool. your words brought me to tears because of your love of learning.. I too, want to work with some film cameras.. never really have. SLR's that is.. Can't wait to see what you come up with..
...duncan19-Feb-2006 17:01
Very cool. Love your words as well and agree with you. Film is difficult to work with but very rewarding. I remember picking up my Minolta with my father. It was a wonderful day. I hope you post some that you took with film.

Personally I am looking for the woman who will give me a Leica.

BTW: Well done shot.
