Rocky Water, Virgin River, Zion National Park, Utah, 2006

An early morning sun reflects a touch of gold on the churning waters of the Virgin River as it plunges through the heart of Zion Canyon. There are numerous contrasting textures creating meaning in this photograph. The frothy water at the bottom contrasts to the dark undulations above it, as well as to the gold water flowing so placidly at the top. The large rocks that strew the river each are studies in opposing textures as well, ranging from smooth at the top to roughly textured in the middle. At the top of the frame, I’ve included a touch of shoreline for scale reference. It, too, is defined by its difference in color and texture.

If I can make a picture that causes you to get up and take a drink, I've done my job as an expressive photographer. Thanks, Ceci, for the colorful analysis of this image. I love shooting water and color to bring out textures-- it is not easily found or done, but when it works, it can soothe the soul, yet stir the brain at the same time. A meditative image, seemingly carved from wood in places, with a blend of metal, liquid, glass and oil in the water, full of beckoning colors. It conjurs up turquoise, copper, stone--elements of the Indians who once roamed in these parts, and the eternal energy of moving fluid that has carved its way through these canyons for eons. I had to get up immediately for a drink, I got so thirsty. Wonderful!

Glad you noticed the S shape here, Dandan. I built the composition of this image around it. And yes, the hint of gold in the water, reflecting the light off the red cliffs of Zion Canyon, gives it a sense of place.

The "S" shape of the water and rocks carries our eyes through the images. The reflection of golden roaky hints us that this is in Zion...

Thanks, John, for picking up on the patterns and shapes here. You have to forget you are looking at water and rocks when you shoot a scene like this, and instead look at the way the elements relate to each other and what that relationship means.

I love moving water shots, so much like an abstract with all of the various patterns and shapes in the scene, from edge to edge. Nice job here, Phil!
