Strong use of diagonal and pattern, but your meter is exposing the scene as "average". You can use a spot meter on the sand here to bring out detail by making the sand darker. The shadowed area should go darker, too. I am not sure if the 20D has a spot meter (a meter that reads about one per cent of the frame) -- I don't think it does. But it has a "near spot" metering mode. Use that, or else reduce the exposure by one full stop and see how it works. You can also work on exposure in photoshop. The problem here is lost texture -- which can be regained by under exposing the sand. Try it next time.
