20060207 Cheapside

Bampton, Oxfordshire

It's probably just hopeless nostalgia, but I find it sad how the English
countryside in general and old cottages in particular have been improved, gentrified
and sanitised. This is a very rare example of a run-down imperfect cottage
that would once have been common-place in Southern England.

Here is another 'unspoilt' old property built from chalk stone that has recently been sold.
So I expect it won't look like this for much longer!

Wonderful mood and detail in these shots, John. Very, very nicely done. V

What a great old building. It is sad that they are changing the countryside. My favorite part about living in England when I was younger was teh old buildings and villages.

They're both lovely. If people wouldn't fix them up, though, they'd become slum territory.

Can't decide which I like better so I'll admire both.

Gorgeous old building! Love the glass work in the upper windows!

What a great find! Were you able to go inside?

A keeper, just as it is. No improvement needed...gets my vote.

Very nicely done John.

Excellent detail here John. Good work.
From your description I would count you lucky in that there they at least keep the building. We destroy our history here to build brand new buildings. Very sad.

Great old cottage. Has seen some remodeling in its day, could use some more. Nice shot.

classic cottage.. 2 chimneys, one door, 4 windows (even if one isn't placed right.. odd that)

I agree with your sentiments entirely John, as a matter of fact I found that everything about the "old country" has been changed beyond recognition, very sad, but they say "that's progress!" Great shots by the way, I hope you can find more examples.

The thing that gets me about places like this, is their "personality" changes so much with the weather. On a sunny day this place would be quite welcoming. Certainly captured the current mood of the place John.
