In the Gaillard (Culebra) Cut. This narrow section near the south end of the canal is the limiting width in the canal. Large ships currently don't pass each other through this section. The Canal Commission is undertaking a widening of the canal in this area so that ships can safely pass. The machinery seen ahead in this picture and in the next three pictures is performing this widening work.
