Seclusion, South Luangwa National Park, Zambia, 2006

Some baboons are brazen. Others, often mothers carrying babies, are more cautious. This one seeks shelter amidst some bushes. This image speaks of vulnerability, an essentially human value. Yet animals can also share that value with us. I try to intensify the feeling of vulnerability by partially abstracting both the mother and baby in the bushes. The mother looks away, leaving us to focus on the tiny eyes of the baby pressed to her belly.

The purpose of an expressive image is to stimulate the imagination of our viewers, Ramma. And that is what this image has done for you. Thank you for telling me what it says to you.

Yes, it seems as if the mum is hiding and protecting the baby from some danger that lies behind the bushes. But the way she looks behind the bushes, also makes me wonder if she is waiting for some other baboon ! Another human quality

Thanks, Dandan. I agee -- vulnerability and protection are two human values that we can associate with this animal image.
