I see this as symbolic of man, progressing towards knowledge (light), looking both up and down, thinking that he is on the right path. But if you study the scene you'll find that there is a gate at the end with a warning sign - the decorative wreath being the ultimate irony and willful ignorance that we're all being led to the slaughter, just like cows.
