The root of all evil [Sin IV]
7 January 2006 (113)

Fovant, Salisbury, UK

I was watching Jack Lemmon act his heart out in The China Syndrome, earlier -- which, of course, also stars Michael Douglas;
and, I suppose, my mind just made a few leaps forward of its own, to one of the latter's best ever performances....

"The point is, ladies and gentlemen, that greed -- for lack of a better word -- is good.
Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.
Greed, in all of its forms -- greed for life, for money, knowledge -- has marked the upward surge of mankind...."

I agree with Duncan and am proud of you. The quote made my blood boil, and I'm glad you don't agree. --mrg

Stephen,

Failure is only in our mind. These photos and centring on the concept of the seven deadly sins is a superb idea. Many people try and fail at bringing this concept of biblical principle to art but you have done it very simply and eloquently. This is not a failure but a triumph. My compliments.

Good words; and so true. I'm therefore quite happy -- in these terms... -- to be classed as a "failure"...!

It has always seemed strange to me...The things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling, are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest, are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first they love the produce of the second.
