20060101 The Magic Roundabout

Swindon has very few claims to fame - centre of Brunel's Great Western Railway, birthplace of Melinda Messenger, Billie Piper and XTC - but it does have one of the world's great roundabouts!

And here on a quiet day is 'The Magic Roundabout' with The County Ground (home of the, er, mighty Swindon Town) towering in the background!

John,
My wife and I were in England in 1989, travelling by car and map. We soon found that at the speed of British traffic, it wasn't easy to read the list of destinations for each exit on the type of sign you have captured in this image. To ensure we took the appropriate exit, I would get into the inside lane and stay there, circulating and dealing with traffic , until Diane was sure which was the right way to go, THEN make our exit move. It worked.

Risked death many times, know it well. My brother in-law used to live in Shrivenham Road (the dead end road alongside the County Ground).

Crikey, it's actually called The Magic Roundabout - I thought it had been named by the locals after it had been built!

Sounds just like Our Capitol Territories "Canberra's London Circuit " There's a fine chance that once you get on there your going to be dizzy & tired of the same scenery by the time you find the exit...you might want to write that on the intinery list of what- not-to-do when here John !!

Rode past Swindon in '95 while on my musical honeymoon (with the 'ex).
Really wanted to stop but the bus didn't :^( Had an XTC song swimming
in my head. (love those Andy Partridge lyrics!)

I've been to Swindon a couple of times following the (er mighty) Ipswich Town (the "Pride of Anglia"!) , and my theory is that Ipswich and Swindon are in fact the same place. Except we missed out on the roundabout... Happy new year John
