Uerige!

The question of whether Uerige is actually the oldest public house in Duesseldorf or not has prompted the consumption of a considerable amount of beer over the years. What is certain is that this patrician house was occupied in the year 1600.

Names and proprietors changed over the centuries - Heidelberger Faß" to "Berliner Hof" to "Zum Bergischen Hof" were passed down until Wilhelm Cürten took control of the private brewery in 1862. Why he is reputed to always have been in a bad mood and - contrary to his beer - have been totally unpalatable, no one knows anymore. The locals referred to him in best Duesseldorf slang as being "uerig" (strange) and the name "Zum Uerigen" was born, although the public house was actually called "Im Heidelberger Faß":

The phrase which had been coined by the local people steadily took hold and became a hard and fast term. Also because Cürtens successor after the Second World War, Rudolf Arnold, was not exactly the definition of happiness either! His battle against tax on schnapps brought about short-term (and it still applies today) that strong drinks were no longer served. Since 1976, the Duesseldorf family Schnitzler has maintained this tradition. However, the domestic operation operated by Wilhelm Cürten has become a high-tech operation, which still operates according to the purity law of 1516 under the certified quality management typical of our time
