With my camera safely tucked in its case, we slowly made our way back to the compound. As we rounded a bend near the compound, our Tracker suddenly called out and the Land Rover came to an abrupt stop. Blocking our path in the roadway was a hippo. The Ranger described the hippo as the most dangerous animal in the reserve. The race was on, me getting my camera out and ready and the hippo sauntering away. Camera out, but with an "unready" flash, I got this picture. A few seconds later, as the flash signaled "ready," the hippo turned and headed away, back to its pond (see the morning safari, day 2, pictures). So I had to settle for the southside of a northbound hippo. Not exactly what I would have wanted, but certainly better than no hippo at all.
