A Cuppa Red
by Vikas

My thought process behind this shot was to reduce the object to one shape, i.e. circles and this was done as two concentric circles by filling the cup with a liquid. Therefore the final result was the reduction of the cup to two concentric circles, one red and the other one white, on a white background, in essence, reducing the colour to just red and white in the shot. Again, this is purely my interpretation of minimalism. Reduction to minimum number of colours and shapes.

Regarding being closer to the edge of the frame, yup possible but I dont know why, I preferred it this way (tried various permutations and combinations and found this appealed to me the most) but will try again and see if I prefer it being closer to the edge of the frame. Regarding border, kind of wanted it like that (dont know why but I dont like my images without framing :-) Thanks.

Very dramatic color, lighting, and composition...lots of eye appeal. While I'm almost always in favor of frames, I think red was the wrong color to use in the frame since it becomes part of the composition. That being said, it's probably what I would have done too :-) -Michael

Really nice, Vikas! The composition makes this one pleasing to me and, I hate to admit it but, I'll go ahead and say I'd love to see you kill the frame on this also :-)

Vikas, This is great. This may do better without the frame (for this challenge only) -Cat

Love your work here Vikas. Of course, red is my favorite color, so I'm biased ;) - Darren (darrenryangreer)

Vikas,

I agree about the red frame being distracting. Also, did you consider including only part of the cup in order to make it less recognizable? I love the way this is lit and the rich color.

Vikas -- This is one of my favorites so far. Love the bold red color contrasted against the subtle shades of white. -- Jeannie (jburly)

Very nice, I like the white on white with red. --Melanie (mlynn)

fine art. don't know what the red liquid is but that's a different aspect. if i would be to aim for minimalism, i wouldn't include the frame for this shot. it is a nice addition from a designer's point of view, but this photograph will work without the frame... it wouldn't limit it and the eye will wander freely. i like negative spaces. good job!

Can you fill us in on the thought behind your composition? I ask because I would have put the cup closer to the edge of the frame. And (this has been bothering me about a few of the entries) wouldn't it be more minimal without the added border? bee1000

How interesting that you should do this, I was just pondering a similar (but not exactly the same) image. Seeing this from you makes me think I was thinking along the right lines...

...I'll be right back!
