Original Totel Pole was stolen from Tongass Island in 1899 by 15 Seattle Business Leaders. It " Showed Up in Pioneer Square Oct. 18th 1899. In 1938 , rot and an arsonist destroyed the pole so Seattle send the Tlingits 5,000 to make another. They cashed the check and send a note saying, " Thanks for the 5,000, that will pay for the first pole which you stole" So Seattle had to pay another 5,000 for this 1938 Replica of the the once that burned....
