Phil Spector, A Christmas Gift for You (front)

Santa Clara, Calif

Philles Records, PHLP 4005, Mono, sealed.
Various Artists

Well, the trial is over; Phil Spector stands convicted of murder and, bad hair and all, sits in a California prison. Considering his age and the fact that he faces a long prison term, there is little chance he will ever enter another recording studio and produce any recordings.

What a strange fate for such a legendary figure, a producer many called a genius and the force behind development of what would be called the "Wall of Sound."

This Christmas LP has withstood the test of time and is considered by many critics to be the best album of his career.

"A Christmas Gift For You" originally had the misfortune of being released on November 22, 1963, the same day as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and was not a major commercial success that year. In the years since, however, it has been embraced as a beloved pop–culture touchstone, with many of its tracks becoming holiday airplay favorites.

In 2003, "A Christmas Gift For You" was ranked Number 142 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Long–time Spector fan Brian Wilson has named it as his all–time favorite LP. The album’s influence has also been reflected in cover versions by contemporary artists.

I recently acquired several original 1960s pressings from a defunct Philadelphia record distributor. This is a rare item because it is an original sealed Philles LP, jacket appears perfect, and there is no drill hole through the cover. This distributor told me he acquired this LP when the Philles remainder stock was sold out of the east coast operations for the label. Philles Records were pressed for east coast distribution under contract by Clarion Record Manufacturing, 1021 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, PA. There is no doubt this is an original LP manufactured in the early 1960s! The seal is good and tight and the corners are sharp and crisp.
