Street Vendor, Plazuela del Baratillo, Guanajuato, Mexico, 2005

As night comes to this tiny plaza in the center of Guanajuato, patrons line up for a quick snack from one the many food vendors who take over its sidewalks. This was a hand-held image, made without a flash at a shutter speed of 1/125th of a second. There was enough light from the one overhead bulb to illuminate the vendor, and partially light the customer who is eating his snack on the left. This image uses abstraction to simplify composition. Because I never use a flash, I can make use of natural shadows to suggest, rather than reveal information. The emphasis is on the vendor. He is well defined, while the two customers and the dark atmosphere add context for meaning.

Thanks, Yiannis. Without the play of light and color here, there would much less expression here. Only description.

The colors are subtle but important here, Jack. Five different colors make up the context for this vendor -- muted by light and shadow, they still offer us a sense of this Mexican street corner.

Good to hear from you, Clara. Mexico was wonderful for people shots. If you have not been there yet, you must go. You even speak their language fluently. I did try to suggest feelings at day's end here -- and yes, it is very natural. People doing whatever they do, not noticing me, winding down their day. I was working fairly close on this one, too -- at about 50mm with the FZ-30.

Phil, I always find poetic street and people shots. This one too, since the people involved are in their natural attitude and activities, not noticing the camera, and the atmosphere is suggestive of their feelings at the end of the day.
