Stilt-walkers on Parade, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, 2005

Stilt-walkers dressed in medieval costumes draw crowds of on-lookers as they move through the portals lining the city's main plaza. I use an abstract approach here to underscore the festival atmosphere that surrounds the Day of The Dead celebrations in San Miguel. I put the viewer into the image by shifting my vantage point behind the stilt-walkers instead of in front of them. By revealing only their shapes, I tried to intensify the scale incongruity between the towering figures and the crowd that surrounds them. There is a crowded feeling to this image – the people swarming around the performers, the wires draped overhead, even the hint of heavy traffic below, establish a mood of festive energy.

What a delightful interpretation of this image, Christine! You pull into focus everything that made this image work for me. The abstracted stilt walkers loom over all, and do indeed seem to come from another time. The man taking the picture at left is important context, because he represents "now" and the stilt-walkers symbolize "then." And yes, they could well be considered "judgemental" in their towering swagger. The old city converges on itself just outside the gate and pulls us through the gate and down into the light. I felt the festivity in this scene, but did not recognize the intimidation in it until you pointed it out. You are correct -- there is definitely tension between fun and threat here. Thanks again for summing up my concept so well, and also for stimulating new thoughts about this image, Christine.

Phil - The stilt walkers, imposing from their height, seem to be coming out of the Middle Ages, looking at the crowd almost in a judgemental way. There is something intimidating and festive at the same time in this picture. The photographer on the left side reminds us that this is a show, something being done in the streets for the public. I like the feel of that old city brought about by the old narrow colourful walls. Christine
