Constructed in 1619, the ruins of St. Jerome in Taos, New Mexico still stand today. The U.S. Army destroyed the church during the 1847 War with Mexico. As the markers fall over, they are gathered gently and added to the pile as shown in the center of the photo. The graves are treated with great respect and to erect the markers after they have fallen would be tampering with sacred ground.
