The locals call this place along the Ria the "petrified forest" Tampeten, a strange place where the remaining tree trunks stand like skeletons of a former forest. Most of the trees in the Yucatan aren't very big or old. I was told that many die in periods of drought as there isn't any surface water to sustain them for long.
