Branding Smoke

In 1998, when my son, Ben, graduated from high school, he had made plans to attend college, had been accepted at a couple schools of his choice, and, we all thought, was preparing to head to college in the fall. A few weeks before graduation he said he really didn't want to do that. So after graduation, he packed his truck and headed west to Montana, then Wyoming. There in Daniel, Wyoming he spent about a year and a half living and working as a cowboy, ranch hand. This is a picture taken from that time, someone took it for Ben, as Ben is the young man in the baseball cap on the south end of this calf being branded (and immunized and castrated).

Ben is now graduating from UB (University at Buffalo) as a mechanical engineer and already has been offered and has accepted a position as a design engineer at MOOG, a company located here in western New York. Spending time as a cowboy was good for him.

Great image. When I was a college Dean it seemed like at least 20% of the young men were NOT ready to be in college. Sounds like Ben made a wise choice and got some real life under his belt. My congrats to him.
Now as an engineer he will be able to throw the bull $hit with the best of them. ;-)

My first experience in America was kettle branding. I thought it was so cool, since I never seen anything like that. I love how your image has that cowboy flair, the smoke gives a good feel to the heat that is now pressed to the animal. Great capture all around.

Fabululous - great action image. The smoke wafting makes this so vivid. The Dude in the black hat looks pretty cool ! :)

LOL at Dan!
This is a terrific shot, and it really proves that taking a year off, on your own, before school is a GOOD thing.

Great shot, Don. This is a familiar sight to me but I didn't think there would be much branding done in Buffalo :>)
