I'm Three!

St. Louis Wineries

A direct answer to a direct question. But there's a lot to see here beyond that if you wish. The sweatshirt without the accompanying hood tells us it's a pleasant fall day. The pizza stains that aren't cleaned up around the mouth tell the viewer that she's in a casual, unpretentious environment. The diamond earings tell the viewer that someone who can afford them loves her very much. The smiling eyes tell us she's enjoying the moment. The intensity of the eyes and direct stare into the lens tell us that she's self-confident and uninhibited. The straight arm and extended finger response to the question tell us that she's confident in her answer and wants you to know.

I've modified this photo since Phil's comment and my response... Since my mistake in cutting off the hand was inherent to the original image, I could only work on mitigating distracting background. That being said, I believe this photo clearly supports the caption with these modifications. I always appreciate constructive critisim, and if you look at my more recent galleries since this photo was taken you'll find I'm taking a much harder look at my focus as a result of Phil's accurate comments.

Phil, Thanks, I have to admit I was so drawn to the eyes and facial expression I missed the blue chair that is distractingly in focus in the backgroiund. You pointed this out in both photos you commented on, but I took your critical eye and reviewed this entire gallery and found it to be a prevailing issue. I did catch it inhttp://www.pbase.com/tomtalbot/image/50440909 "This is Why We're Here:, and compensated, but I should have taken the time to think through this on all the shots. Point well taken, thanks for taking the time to look. Of course higher quality lenses is one way to combat this, but Photoshop can be used as a compensator for improper aperture and I failed to make the adjustment. The fingers were present in the original and I purposely cropped it to this point to emphasize the "3", but I do see your point that it is distracting to the viewer as they are searching for the rest of the hand to see how it plays in. Thanks again. Great to hear from you and I appreciate your comments.

You read the meaning very well in this image, Tom. But it can be improved by watching your backgrounds more effectively. The blue stuff at left does not add to meaning and it distracts from the subjects response. The fingers are chopped off at the edge as well-- watch your edges as shoot, too. Even with these problems, the selective focus helps you simplify the image and make the picture express the ideas you want it to.
