"Earthquake proof"

Today, an earthquake of magnitude 7.4 hit the India and Pakistan border.
We at Gurgaon felt it around 9:30 am. It was frightening. As we ran down
12 storeys with not even our slippers on, (and yes, not even my camera) all I
could think of was why did we rent an apartment so high.
After an hour and after things had settled down, and as we trickled up I could not but
wonder why they are building so many more of these high rises.
I guess sometimes amassing money is more important than feeling down to earth.
