Some experiments work, some don't. There's an eclipse today, and I tried to capture it using a pinhole in a bit of paper casting an image onto a white wall. When that was visually uninteresting, I slapped on an infrared filter, stopped right down and pointed the camera at the sun for just long enough to get a shot off. That didn't work either, as you can see, but it did make some interesting images of purple flare. Here's one of them.
