This is a particularly interesting photo obtained from Aunt Doris.
The man at the far right is Alfonse Aliukevicius.
He married Anthoni Lapinskas (daughter of Mary's sister Constance).
Our family in Lithuania has told us (my father & me) that
Alfonse was considered a leader of the Lithuanian resistance movement - against the Soviets.
It's a position that brought the family much pride & sorrow.
He himself was killed in the ongoing conflict with the Soviets.
His wife was 'sentenced' to 12 years in Siberia.
And his wife's younger brother - Jereme was murdered as well - at the age of 19.
The story is that Jereme was used as 'bait' by the Soviets...
they sent him into dug-outs in the forest where they suspected resistance fighters were hiding.
It is said that on one day - he did in fact surprise a group of resistance fighters in a dug-out... who fired on him from in front of him.
When the Soviets heard the gunshots... they began firing on him from behind.
His body was dragged to the center of the city in Kruonis
- a village near Darsuniskis - with many other victims.
Families were not permitted to bury their boys.
George Lapinskas - Jereme's father - the husband of Mary's sister, Constance
- bribed a Soviet guard (with money he earned working in the USA)
- for the right to reclaim & bury his son.
See pictures of Jereme & Alfonse's wife (Anthoni) in this same "gallery" -
in happier times - at the reunion photo with Mary Kupchella - taken in 1938.
LITHUANIAN:
