The left hand bird is one of two Mottled Ducks seen on KY Lake on 9/24/05. This is the 4th record of this bird for TN, and the 1st away from Memphis.
Though of poor quality and distant, several features are visible. The body, including belly, is overall dark, with extensive and wide tawny buff edges and markings. The tail is dark and uniform with the body, and the speculum lacks the broad white borders shown by Mallards. The throat is buffy and unmarked, and even in this marginal photo the slightest line of demarcation is shown where the lightly marked face meets the unmarked throat.
