Here we are at the beginning of Skutumpah Road. We didn't get far before we gave up
and resigned ourselves to travelling all the way around (up Hwy 12 again and through Bryce
again) and coming into the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument from the north instead.
The problem with this road was not drifts of deep sand but terrible jarring washboard.
For most 4X4 vehicles the washboard would probably not be a problem, but we
stiffened the springs of our Toyota Tacoma to increase its load-carrying capacity,
and that together with the weight of the trailer made this road extremely punishing for our pickup.
