In the late 1890s, Percival Lowell asked A.E. Douglass
to take this Alvan Clark Telescope to the Arizona Territory
to search for a site to build a new observatory. Using this
first Lowell telescope, astronomical seeing was tested
and the site in Flagstaff secured for the Observatory. This
new exhibit, with a centerpiece of the original 1892 telescope,
explains that expedition and subsequent founding
of Lowell Observatory.
