Chariots of Fire

Outside Kings College
Cambridge England

From a modest fun run involving a few hundred willing volunteers in the grounds of a Cambridge school, Chariots of Fire has grown to become one of the region's biggest annual charity events.
The number of runners taking part has soared to well over 2,000 and the event has become a fantastic spectacle as the participants race through the city's ancient streets.

The race has been backed since its inception in 1992 to the present day by three local firms - Cambridge law firm Hewitsons, city financial experts RSM Robson Rhodes and the Cambridge Evening News.

The event was founded by Bill Matthews, who continues to be race director today.
The first race, in 1992, was held in the grounds of the Perse School but soon moved to the now-familiar course around the Queens' Green, the city centre and the Backs.

This amazing event has now raised an incredible £400,000 for local charities - and gets bigger and better every year.

Chariots takes its name from the eponymous 1981 film in which two British track athletes, one a determined Jew and the other a devout Christian, compete for glory in the 1924 Olympics.

Lord Puttnam, the man behind the film, said: "I'm very proud of the fact that 25 years after its production, Chariots of fire is still proving it value by, among other things, helping to raise money for charities in Cambridgeshire year after year after year.

"It must of struck a chord for I know of no other film that manages to evoke the same, entirely positive reaction."

Cool shot Joanne, BBC TV covered the "The Great Northern Run" but I do not think they even covered this on local radio, (if you did I am sorry BBC) (*.*)
