Baby Mockingbird in hurricane

Louisiana

In the height of the hurricane a baby mockingbird flew on to my porch and the window ledge for protection. You can see how heavily the rain was being windswept. After the wind died down I saw it beneath my autombile where its mother was franctically calling for it. The wonders of nature are endless.

It's nice that he made it. I imagine a lot of them didn't. You captured his pathetic demeanor here perfectly.

Poor little thing ... it looks so miserable! Glad its mom was looking out for it ... :)

Such a powerful & meaningful photograph & commentary... God Blesses even the lil' birds.
{And those who care for them too ~ You are an incredible woman, Coleen}

This is a wow shot. It is an amazing story, too.

What a beautiful capture. Well done under the worst of environs. How did you think to have your camera ready in a time like that?

It looks bedraggled, but it survived...

Amazing - and still shooting during a hurricane too!

Evocative photo - and I'm very glad to hear mother and baby were reunited.

A strong example of contrasts; soft beautiful colors, and a violent storm raging; the innocence of one so small, but its strength to survive despite all odds, as its mother calls for it after the storm passes. And it shows your strength under fire, photographing in the middle of a hurricane! A true photographer! Thanks for sharing this moment with us!

I think this is a great image. The softness of the colours and the composition make it for me. Well done !

Great image

Mockingbird mothers are extremely protective. I'm convinced that the little one survived, was found and is being taught its variety of songs right this minute. This is a powerful image.

Coleen this image is full of emotion..it shows us just how helpless we are against the elements..voting

If the mother survived then perhaps the infant did too...Would like to think so at least.
Zak18-Sep-2005 11:10
great catch!
I dont think i would be thinking about taking pics during a hurricane! :-o
Yvonne18-Sep-2005 10:38
This is a superb picture even without the sad story of the little bird Coleen.
I can only iterate what has been already said..the fragility of life, one
wonders but doubts the little birds survived. Wonderful to have you back.
Karen Stuebing18-Sep-2005 09:08
I hope it survived and I like to think it did. Birds and wild animals have instincts on how to escape nature's wrath. Still, a sad photo that sums up the toll it can take on living beings.
Tor18-Sep-2005 08:20
This photo is very strong. It shows how fragile we all are .
bela4518-Sep-2005 08:13
Oh poor thing, what a beautiful image!
Lee Rudd18-Sep-2005 08:07
I can imagine this poor bird clinging on frantically.... but I hope that the mother found it and continued feeding
