Kilmartin cemetary

Kilmartin was a beautiful town we stumbled upon on the west coast of Scotland near the Oban peninsula.
The area showed Irish celtic influences in the more recent tombstones, but it also was the location
of a more ancient megalithic burial and societal center,
including several huge stone mounds, menhir, stone circles, and a hillfort site of former tribal leader coronations, which some historians believe was one of the largest gathering places of prehistoric Scots or Picts.

The cemetary at Kilmartin Church, Kilmartin contained an extensive and unique collection of medieval burial slabs.
Decorated with figures of soldiers, celtic braids, circles, and other symbols,
many were created for the Malcom family.
Kilmartin also was located near an area rich in historically significant Neolithic artifacts.
A field of standing stones is part of a larger extensive prehistoric complex called Nether Largie,
including stone cairns and a stone circle at Templewood.
