Hale Boggs Bridge and the South Carolina National Guard Vehicles

Luling, Louisiana

I reported to school this morning to start getting prepared for the return of our students and the many displaced students who will be joining our district. As of Friday afternoon, we had 600 new students register in the district. Registration will continue through Wednesday. Our students will return to school on Thursday.

There is a wonderful National Guard unit from South Carolina who is being housed at our school. They were supposed to move out tomorrow, but their departure has been delayed. I set up some "movie" rooms for them before I left work today so that they could have a movie night. They are sleeping in classrooms, the cafeteria, gym and library. My classroom has been set up as a communications center and has two officers sleeping in it. They having been helping with food, water and ice distribution as well as traffic control. This is some of their vehicles in the grass next to the school as I arrived early this morning.

Having a new building helps in times of crises... I can't help thinking how crowded it will be with 600 new children and the distraction of National Guardsmen nearby, never mind what else is on the childrens minds! Good luck

What an odd but welcome sight this must be for your commute. I can't imagine the kids feelings about now.

Lots of changes to get used to. At least things are moving in the right direction, however slowly. And the skies are still beautiful.

It seems that things got more under control once the army moved in. This is a great photojournalistic shot. 600 more students! What will your class sizes be like?

Must feel good to have a direct hand in helping out, like you do. What a sight -- all those military vehicles and all those soldiers in your school!

Great shot of this bridge and the many big trucks. Sounds like a busy time for all getting ready
for the extra students and helping the National Guard. I'm sure everybody appreciates your support.

Almost an unreal scene. I know many parents will be glad to see school begin again.
