Wood Block

by Helen Betts

Ankara, Turkey

This is a closeup of a Japanese woodblock of a Kyoto scene by Clifton Karhu. It's part of a set of three: the original block (this one), which has been made unusable for more prints by the artist's mark in red up in the corner; an intermediate, two-tone print; and the final woodblock print, the last made from this block. (100/100).

Helen, I've seen and admired many wood block prints but never actually seen a wood block close up. I really like the grain in the block formed naturally and by the artist. Very nice example.

Helen, I really like the intricate detail of this woodblock...nice lighting/exposure and color here. I like the way you cropped it too. Nice shot. MFC

Helen... It must be a pleasure to spend time in the realm of your making.
This feels like a mandala and I love the mirror-positive.aspect, mentally.

Wonderful vision.

Beautiful detailed wood carving - I love the even lighting and the bit of red color in the corner!

Thanks, Deb! It's lit by natural light. We don't get any direct sunlight in our living room, but in the afternoon the building across from us gets blasted by the sun, so it's actually the sun reflecting off that apartment building onto the woodblock, with contrast boosted in PS. Helen

Talk about the beauty of wood! Helen, this is wonderful. Color contrasts of woods, fine detail, and excellent lighting, it's all here! By the way, how DID you accomplish this lighting?---Deb
