The Jingpaw Rangers were the same unit as the
Kachin Rangers, both names being used interchangeably
to denote the guerrilla force. The tribal name for the
Kachins is "Jingpaw," and many of the Indians and the
American team chiefs preferred to call the Jingpaws by
their native name.
The shoulder patches were also worn interchangeably by the
American Agents and Burmese Rangers, and that the initial batch
of insignia was of standard U.S. manufacture. After the patches
arrived in the Theater, they were modified by cutting off that
portion above the red and white stripes, the shield was reversed
to point upwards, the strip with the words "Jingpaw (or Kachin)
Rangers" was sewn across the bottom of the patch, and the top
part of the shield with "USA" was discarded.
The Headquarters for OSS Detachment 101 was located in New Delhi,
India, and the Jingpaw patch was approved for local wear only.
