John Newling (Professor of Installation Sculpture at Nottingham Trent University): 'If Spring Never Comes'.
"For [the Westonbirt International Festival of Gardens, 2003] John has created a sculpture in the form of a three-drawer desk containing ribbons.
Visitors are invited to write their wishes and questions onto the ribbons, which are then applied to a tree, in time forming a bolus (a ball-shaped growth on a tree).
It is hoped that this bolus will later be cast in bronze and the wishes and questions published in book form. For the brief period of the festival,
the sculpture will be a coalition between nature and humanity."
