Spiral Jetty was peppered with these tiny brine flies, each about 1/8 inch (3mm) in length.
As I walked along the jetty, they flew off the salt, creating a constant cloud just in
front of my advancing legs. After I passed, they settled back on the salt behind me. I
was wearing shorts and sandals and---not knowing anything of their behavior---was
worried that the little buggers would swarm onto my legs and bite me to distraction.
To my relief, only one landed on my leg, and it didn't bite.
