Coconino County Sheriff's Search & Rescue
The Coconino County Sheriff's Office Search & Rescue
Unit consists of trained Deputies and approximately
100 volunteer men and women trained in many specialty
areas of search and rescue.
Coconino County's many exciting outdoor recreational
opportunities attract thousands of outdoor enthusiasts
every year. Many hunters, skiers, boaters, mountain bikers,
hikers and rock climbers get lost and/or injured. The SAR
Unit utilizes a variety of methods to locate and/or render
aid. Team members undergo extensive technical training
and utilize ATV's, 4 X 4's, helicopters, boats, mountain/rock
climbing gear, scuba gear, horses, skiers and snowmobiles
to conduct search and rescues.
Since July 1998, Search & rescue has saved 539 lives. SAR
relies heavily on the unpaid professional volunteers who
received training in short haul, repelling, utilizing map
& compass, and other advanced skills related to outdoor
recreation and emergencies. On average, the Search & Rescue
unit responds to 139 calls each year.
