Beginning January 18, 1873 The Prescott Townsite
was first surveyed in 1864 by Robert Groom and Van Smith.
Lots were priced at $7.50, $10.00 and $15.00 with corner
lots at $20.00.
On May 12, 1873, Village ordinance No. 1 established that
the Marshal shall receive for his service as Street and
Fire Commissioner $40 per month. The Marshal shall receive
5% of all taxes collected by him and shall be entitled to
all other fees allowed by statute provided that in all cases
of conviction for violation of Village ordinances, such fees
and all costs shall be charged against each defendant and
in no case against the Village.
During three months of 1878 (September – December)
V.W. Earp was employed by the Village of Prescott
as Night Watchman.
On October 8, 1879, Village ordinance No. 19, included
direction from Council that the Marshal and his deputies
shall wear a star 3 inches in diameter upon the breast
within sight when on duty.
On July 1, 1881, the Marshal was requested to appoint 3 deputies
for the July 4th activities at a per diem of $5.00 each.
The position of Marshal was eliminated on December 14, 1883
when the positions of Chief of Police, Town Attorney, Town
Assessor, Town Treasurer and Town Recorder were established
by city Ordinance No. 8.
During the annual election, held January 1, 1884, James
Dodson was elected to the Chief of Police position, a
position he held until January 1890.
