Drove up to Horsetail Falls today. That is I drove to the trailhead of the trail that leads to Horsetail Falls. It's not too far from Lake Tahoe along Rt. 50. The first part of the trail isn't too bad and is easy enough to follow. The second part is in a desolation wilderness area. This means that the trail is not maintained and you travel at your own risk. You have to fill out a day pass stating your destination and how many days you plan to stay. This is so they will have a good idea where to look for you if you go missing. I'm a novice hiker and was not quite prepared for this hike. I also over packed and started late. What this all ends up meaning is I didn't make it to the falls. I think I was about ¾ of the way there when I decided to turn around. I was pretty tired when I got back to the car so I think I made the right decision. I now know what to expect so next time I will start earlier and pack lighter. This image gives you a little idea of what the area is like. That's Horsetail Falls in the distance.
