(Maricopa County)
Glendale was founded in 1892, primarily because of the
fertile land of the Salt River Valley, which was ideal
for agriculture. Glendale was a quiet, religious community
based on strong family values; a great place to raise a
family. The community grew and prospered and in 1910, with
a population of approximately 1,000 residents, Glendale
incorporated. The Glendale area, which had been patrolled
and cared for previously by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s
Office, now would have its own marshal. The City elected
M.R. Wells, who opposed J.D. Rudd, a well-known lawman, to
be the first marshal. Due to the City’s small size, merchants
were deputized to assist Marshall Wells when necessary
