reAligned
by johnebones

Serial xrays of a two year old child with a badly displaced femur fracture,
showing gradual realignment of the bone over the course of 6 months.

The image on the left was taken at the time of injury, with the leg in a fiberglass cast.
The middle image was at 6 weeks and the right image at 6 months post injury.

Children rarely need surgery for these types of fractures because dramatic realignment
(straightening of the bone during the healing process) is possible in the very young.

Hi John! Excellent sequence... you always seem to have some interesting work-related thing to bring into the challenges and this is pretty cool (if certainly painful for the subject). I'm happy that everything turned out ok for the little one! Best Regards! Carlos Ch.

poor little thing -- but, this is very interesting, and a neat triptych!

Beautiful image and especially nice with the varying colors. It hurts to look at since I had a broken femur years ago (from a roller-skating accident) -- spent two months in traction and three in a cast. Helen

Very cool - well executed.

John, it is amazing how young bones heal...the same holds true in animals, especially cats. This makes a really nice triptych...good subject choice, nice colors, and neat sense of texture from the casting material. Well done. MFC

Wow, that's amazing! The bones find their way back to re-alignment without haven't to be held with pins. Does that only work with really young kids? Great idea for the theme!

Unbelievable, John! Very educational, and appropriate for the challenge in a dual manner. You have the "lining up" of the fractured bone, and the "lining up" of the three x-rays. But then, would we expect any less of you? ;-)
